Vegetable-tanned leather is a type of leather tanned by the most ancient natural method. This process takes place for a long time using special herbs, and limits as much as possible harmful chemicals so that this leather material is very friendly to humans.

Vegetable-tanned leather herbal tanning agents

The important substances after being extracted are dried into a powder form. But sometimes the lower version with the content is lower than the powder form.

Quebracho: Extracted from the Quebracho trees in South America and mainly intended for tanning soles. They produce heavy and dark leather. The molecules inside their leather are large, so it is difficult to penetrate deeply, so in the re-tanning part, only a small part is used when making leather types that require a sharp face, or a clear pattern.

Mimosa: Produced and made from acacia trees in Africa, Brazil, and India. Mimosa has a small molecule inside, so it is easy to penetrate and has a light color. They are widely used for the re-tanning part of the shoe. Soft, spongy mimosa leather.

Chestnut: Chestnut is made from the bark of cheap nut trees. The main suppliers are France, Itali, and Yugoslavia. Chestnut has a large internal molecular structure and gives the leather a dark color. They are used a lot in the production of sole leather, but rarely in the re-tanning part.

Valonia and Myrobalan: Herb tanning agents have large molecules and give the leather a dark color, so it is often used for sole tanning but only a small part is used in facial re-tanning.

Herbs are all-natural extracts. These are compounds of strong cyclic organics. Mainly Phenol or Naphthalene derivatives.

After finishing the herbal tanning, Vegtan leather is removed from the remaining herbal substances on the leather surface, the leather is squeezed and covered to prevent the herbal substances from being oxidized.

These substances penetrate into the cowhide layer for a long time soaked, so that there is a pleasant aroma, not the pungent smell of synthetic leather: PU leather, Simili leather.

Environmental friendliness

As mentioned above, due to being tanned with herbs, the waste after skin treatment of Vegtan leather does not cause harmful substances to the environment. Unlike vegetable-tanned cowhide, when tanned with chromium, the wastewater discharged into the environment contains many synthetic chemicals such as dyes, acidic wastewater and relatively high chromium content.

These substances affect the soil and water environment if there is no proper waste treatment plant. And Vegtan cowhide is tanned with plants, so it has less impact on the environment.
