Audi Gear Shift Operation
Controlled Electronically in Audi Automatic Transmission
The automatic transmission in your Audi is controlled electronically, which means that there are no mechanical links between the gears and the transmission. This means that there are no mechanical links between the gear shifter and the transmission. This eliminates many moving parts and increases the functionality of the system.
There are several transmission modes available: P or Park, N or Neutral, D or Drive, and S or Drive Sport. Which allows you to move forward in either a standard driving mode or a more energetic sport mode. Moreover, R is for Reverse, and Tiptronic, which allows you to select the shift points manually.
There are two electronic buttons on the left-hand side of the gear lever: a lock button and a park button. The default position when the car is stationary is a park; to shift out of the park, the engine must be running with the foot on the brake.
It is also shown in the instrument cluster display. If you want to change from Park to Reverse with your foot on the brake, press the lock button and then push past the first pressure point to bypass Neutral; you will hear a confirmation sound when in Reverse and the speedometer will show R when Neutral is selected.
More Driving modes and features of Audi Gear Shift
If the engine is switched off when the car is in neutral, it will remain in neutral for approximately 30 minutes and then the park will be engaged – useful for automatic car washes when the car needs to remain in neutral while driving The normal D driving mode is the default.
You can also select your own shift points by selecting Tiptronic mode: while driving, tilt the shifter to the right, and the M symbol for the manual will now appear in the speedometer, while in Tiptronic mode, push the shifter forward. You can also use the paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel to perform the same function. The right paddle shifts up and the left paddle shifts down.
If you do not shift before the engine reaches a critical speed, the transmission will shift automatically to prevent stalling or over-revving to return to automatic. To change gear, simply tilt the gear lever to the left when leaving the vehicle, press the park button on the gear lever, turn the ignition off while driving or reversing, the park is engaged automatically. And if the vehicle was in Tiptronic mode, the gear lever returns to the standard drive position and shifts to park. The Audi powertrain is truly a marvel of engineering and advanced technology.
