Audi Tech Tutorial: Apple CarPlay USB Connection

iPhones with an operating system of iOS 9.1 or higher can connect with and be controlled through the MMI display using Apple Carplay.  The iPhone must be unlocked and connected to the MMI with a USB cable. The MMI will ask to confirm the use of Apple Carplay. Select Apple Carplay, and a data transfer alert, and agreement will appear to select Yes agree on the iPhone.

You have the option of enabling Apple Carplay while the phone is locked. Select Allow, next, you have the option to enable wireless Carplay or use USB only. To use Carplay via a wired USB connection only, select Use USB Only. The Apple Carplay interface appears in the MMI in the display apps on the iPhone. That is compatible with Carplay and will show up on the Car Play, home screen apps can be accessed by tapping their respective icons.

To return to the Car Play home screen while in an application, Press the Car Play home button in the lower left of the display to enable Car Play. If it was declined on the initial USB connection select Phone Apps. Select two connected devices and then choose the desired device. Next, allow access while the iPhone lock and select USB only. The Apple Carplay interface appears in the MMI when accessing music via Car Play only.

iPhones with an operating system of iOS 9.1 or higher can connect with and be controlled through the MMI display wirelessly using an Apple Carplay. No app is required it is part of the iOS to use CarPlay wirelessly. Unlock the phone and enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The wireless connection between the MMI and CarPlay will be via the Wi-Fi channel with the car in park and the ignition on.

Open the Bluetooth menu, now, select phone in the upper display then connect a mobile device. A list of available devices will appear, select the desired device a pin will send to the iPhone if it matches the pin in the MMI. Select Pair the iPhone requests to SYNC contacts and favorites to the MMI. Then Select Allow then select Use Carplay, the MMI will respond with a confirmation request to use Apple Carplay. Select Apple CarPlay, and a data transfer alert and agreement will appear. Select Yes, agree, now, choose between Apple Carplay or the MMI phone system select Apple Carplay.

The Car Play interface will appear in the MMI. It is advisable to enable show notifications and SYNC contacts in the Bluetooth menu by selecting the eye icon next to the Audi MMI listing. Press the Car Play home button to return to the Car Play home screen. Press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel or select the phone apps button on the MMI home screen. Until the Audi smartphone interface appears in the MMI, select two connected devices.
